There are hundreds of web designers in Sri Lanka, from freelancers to large agencies, and prices vary widely. A website is a long-term investment, so choosing the wrong partner can cost you far more than the initial price. This guide explains what to check before you hire anyone.
1. Look at real, live websites they have built
Ask for links, not just screenshots. Open the websites on your phone and check how they look, how fast they load and whether the forms and buttons work. A good portfolio shows variety: business websites, online stores, booking systems and websites for different industries. You can see ours on the projects page.
2. Test the speed of their work
Paste one of their client websites into Google PageSpeed Insights. Speed affects both customer experience and Google rankings, and many Sri Lankan visitors browse on mobile data. If their own website and client websites are slow, yours probably will be too.
3. Ask how they handle SEO
A beautiful website that nobody finds is not much use. Ask whether the price includes basic on-page SEO: page titles, meta descriptions, proper heading structure, image alt text, a sitemap, schema markup and Google Search Console setup. These are the foundation of search engine optimisation and should be included in any professional website.
4. Check that it is built for mobile first
Most people in Sri Lanka will see your website on a phone. The design should be planned for small screens first, with large buttons, readable text and click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons that work with one thumb.
5. Make sure you will own your website
Confirm that the domain is registered in your business name and that you will receive the website files and admin access once it is paid for. Avoid arrangements where you cannot move your website if you change provider later.
6. Understand exactly what the price includes
Cheap packages can become expensive when content writing, extra pages, hosting, email or changes are charged separately. Ask for a written quote that lists:
- Number of pages and the features included
- Whether content writing and images are included
- Domain, hosting and email costs, and renewal prices
- Number of design revisions
- Support and maintenance after launch
Our web design packages list everything that is included in each option.
7. Ask about support after launch
Websites need updates, backups and security checks. Find out who you contact when something breaks, how quickly they respond and whether they offer maintenance plans.
8. Look for a partner that can help you grow
A website is the start, not the finish. A company that also understands SEO, social media and online advertising can help you turn your website into a steady source of customers, instead of sending you elsewhere after launch.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Can I see three live websites you built recently?
- Is on-page SEO included, and what exactly do you set up?
- Will the domain and website be registered and owned by my business?
- How long will it take, and what do you need from me?
- What happens after launch if I need changes?
